Player ratings: Battered and bruised

Samoa had their moments in the scrums in the first half but struggled in the line-outs. They also had no imagination on attack against a solid Springbok defence.

Warren Fortune rates the Samoan players!

15 Tim Nanai-Williams

Had a keen eye for the gap and was his team's greatest attacking threat. He did not shy away from the physical stuff as well.

7/10

14 Ken Pisi

Was overshadowed by Bryan Habana and did not have the pace out wide to threaten the Springboks.

3/10

13 Paul Perez

Worked hard in the midfield trying to contain Damian de Allende but was ineffective on attack. He also failed to put his wings into space.

4/10

12 Rey Lee-Lo

Got poor ball from his flyhalf and hardly had any space to work worth in attack. Tried his best to get over the gain line for his team.

4/10

11 Alesana Tuilagi

Made some good carries but was found wanting on defence on a number of occasions.

5/10

10 Mike Stanley

The flyhalf could not assert himself on the game and it seemed like he was just making up the numbers in the backline. His goal kicking was also poor.

4/10

9 Kahn Fotuali'i

Gave his team quick service and tried his best to spark some life into the backline. However, his decision making on attack cost his team some try scoring opportunities.

6/10

8 Ofisa Treviranus

Made a number of telling runs for his team and got over the advantage line with ease. The big No.8 can be proud of his performance.

7/10

7 Jack Lam

Made plenty of tackles but was outclassed at the breakdown by a fantastic Springbok back row. He also failed to carry the ball with any effectiveness.

3/10

6 TJ Ioane

Madea truck load tackles in the game and put his body on the line to try and keep his team in the game.

6/10

5 Iosefa Tekori

Got owned by Victor Matfield in the line-outs and looked out of sorts before being substituted early in the second half.

2/10

4 Teofilo Paulo

Made a couple of tackles, but struggled against the Springboks' physicality. He also gave away a few penalties in the first half which proved costly.

4/10

3 Census Johnston

Was solid in the scrums but looked off pace in open play and had be replaced 10 minutes into the second half.

6/10

2 Motu Matu'u

Struggled to find his line-out jumpers on a number occasions and hardly carried the ball in the game. Defineltey not one of his best games.

4/10

1 Sakaria Taulafo

The prop gave Jannie du Plessis a torrid time in the scrums and was one of his team's best players on the park.

7/10

Replacements:

16 Ole Avei (On for M Matu'u, 51 mins)

Improved the line-out situation a bit but could not stamp his authority on open play.

5/10

Got dominated by Frans Malherbe in scrum in the second half and could not carry on where Sakaria Taulafo left off.

4/10

18 Anthony Perenise (On for C Johnston, 51 min)

Made some good tackles but other than that there was not much too speak of.

4/10

19 Faifili Levave (On for I Tekori, 46 min)

Did not do much better than Iosefa Tekori and looked like he was just going through the motions.

4/10

20 Vavae Tuilagi (On for O Treviranus, 62 min)

Was a shadow of the player he replaced.

3/10

21 Vavao Afemai (On for K Fotuali'i, 77 min)

Not enough time to be rated.

22 Tusi Pisi (On for M Stanley, 52 min)

His forwards did not give him any quality ball to work with and had defend for most of the last 20 minutes.

5/10

23 George Pisi (On for A Tuilagi, 65 min)

Not enough time to be rated.
