Beale steps out with Randwick

Troubled Wallaby star Kurtley Beale has checked out of the facility where he spent the last two weeks recovering from his alcohol addiction.

Two weeks ago Beale quit rugby, the second time this year, to check himself into a facility to deal with his demons.

On Monday the Australian Rugby Union confirmed that Beale had completed the first phase of a counselling program.

"Following discussions between all parties – including the ARU, RUPA and the Melbourne Rebels – the decision has been taken that Kurtley will remain in Sydney at this stage to continue working with his support network," the ARU said in a brief statement.

"However, he will return to playing Rugby via his Sydney club Randwick."

With the arrival of the British and Irish Lions in Australia just a week away, it is still looking extremely unlikely that Beale will play any part.

"Any future selection will be dependent upon successful completion of his treatment program," the ARU statement said a fortnight ago – leaving the back door ever so slightly ajar for the troubled player.

Beale has been in continual off-field strife this season and was suspended by the Rebels for striking teammates Cooper Vuna and Gareth Delve during the team's tour in South Africa on March 23.

The Rebels have Super Rugby games against the Reds and Brumbies over the next fortnight, before the late season recess for the British and Irish Lions tour.

Beale may not have many more opportunities to play for the Rebels who also have matches against the Lions on June 25 and then a final regular Super Rugby season game against the Highlanders on July 12.

Wallaby coach Robbie Deans said Beale still has a chance of playing for the Wallabies against the Lions despite missing the preliminary Wallabies squad announced earlier this month.

The Lions kick off their Australian tour against the Western Force in Perth on June 5 before three Tests against the Wallabies in Brisbane (June 22), Melbourne (June 29) and Sydney (July 6).
