Fijian tackle puts Morisi in hospital

Italy centre Luca Morisi has undergone surgery to have his spleen removed following a heavy tackle early in Saturday's 37-31 Test win over Fiji, according to the Italian Rugby Federation.

Morisi was floored by a crushing tackle from Asaeli Tikoirotuma in the opening minutes and although he returned to the fray following treatment he looked jaded and was forced off shortly afterwards.

The Benetton Treviso centre was taken to hospital, where doctors decided to remove his damaged spleen.

A statement from Italian team bosses said: "Italy and Treviso centre Luca Morisi was admitted to Cremona hospital where he had his spleen removed as a result of suffering trauma to his abdomen early in the test match against Fiji.

"The surgery… was a complete success. His condition is stable."

Italy's win was their first of their three-match test series in November.

It came a week after a 50-20 thrashing by Australia in Turin and a week ahead of hosting Argentina at Rome's Olympic stadium.
