Time limited for Hoskins' successor

SARU confirmed that nominations for the position vacated by Hoskins earlier this month will close on Monday, September 26.

Hoskins last week announced that he was stepping down as President of SARU after a decade of service.

The 14 member unions of SARU have until that date to nominate candidates.

A general meeting to hold elections is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 27.

Deputy president Mark Alexander is acting as the interim President until the elections.

"To be eligible for election, nominees have to be members of their union's executive or of the board of directors of their union's commercial arm and must have served for more than one year immediately prior to the general meeting at which the election is to take place," SARU said in a statement.

"Members of the SA Rugby [SARU professional arm] Executive Council are also eligible for election.

"SA Rugby has also called for nominations for deputy president and for a position on the executive council in the event of a vacancy arising should such a member be elected as president.

"However, any such election would fall away if a President were elected from outside the current executive council membership."

Hoskins was elected for a two-year term in February 2006, when he opposed the incumbent, Brian van Rooyen.

He was elected to the executive of the International Rugby Board (IRB) – now World Rugby – in the same year and rose to be vice-chairman of the organisation before opting not to stand for re-election in May this year.

He was re-elected as SARU President on a further three occasions in 2008 (two years) and for four-year terms in 2010 and 2014.
