It is believed the 31-year-old's decision to return to South Africa is due to "his willingness to best prepare for the 2019 World Cup with the Springboks."

It is expected that Vermeulen will sign a dual contract with SA Rugby and the Stormers.

Vermeulen’s return to has been mooted for some time with reports in December suggesting Johan 'Rassie' Erasmus, SA Rugby's new Director of Rugby, was eager to lure him back in his bid to revive the Springboks after two disastrous seasons .

Vermeulen's experience could prove to be vital to the Springboks' cause and he is also a favourite to take over the Springboks' captaincy this year.

The Bok No.8 left South Africa in 2015 to join Toulon and he has only picked up 39 caps for the Springboks so far.
