Anscombe future still up in the air

 

Anscombe, who is currently contracted to the Chiefs for Super Rugby – but only until the end of the season – is on the Blues, Cardiff Blues, New Zealand and Wales international team's wish list.

 

The current Chiefs No.10 recently penned a two-year extension to his contract with the Auckland team which plays in the NPC but it’s understood he has an escape clause should he decide to move to Wales.

 

Furthermore the Blues Super Rugby team look set to offer the 22-year-old their No.10 jersey if he signs a deal with them to leave tournament champions Chiefs.

 

On top of all this, All Blacks coach, Steve Hansen seems to be showing a keen interest in the  multifaceted backline player praising his pace, versatility and hinting he’s on the radar for All Black selection.

 

Beyond New Zealand Anscombe has further options thanks to his mixed heritage, Anscombe qualifies to play for the Welsh international team due to his mother being from the country.

 

This has lead to speculation that Welsh coach Warren Gatland, who is in the market for a pivot of quality, may be trying to lure the flyhalf up North.

 

Wales coach Warren Gatland has been in Hamilton – the home of the Chiefs – on flying visit to see his family and watch some Super Rugby action.

 

Anscombe has been very tight lipped on the subject, only stating that he is relishing playing flyhalf – a fact the bargaining franchises seem well aware of.

 

"For now I still see myself as a No.10 that can play 15,” he said.

 

“It’s always nice to be able to play a couple of positions, have a bit of utility value.

 

“I’m working hard on my game at No.10 and hopefully I can show that over the next couple of weeks.”

 

When pushed further about his future Anscombe remained evasive.

 

“I haven't looked too far ahead. 

 

"When There’s a bit of a break there will be a chance to sit down and reflect but I haven't done that at this stage.”
