Bayonne deny firing drunken Phillips
Bayonne have denied reports that they have terminated Welsh scrumhalf Mike Phillips' contract after he attended a training session drunk.
The Welsh halfback has had his fair share of controversies in the past, and the latest incident saw him allegedly attend a video session at the Top 14 club while under the influence of alcohol along with teammates Dwayne Haare and Stephen Brett.
The club held a disciplinary hearing and left Phillips out of the match-day squad for the clash against Montpellier on Friday, although Brett and Haare will both feature.
This prompted speculation in the French media on Thursday, with a few outlets reporting that Phillips has been sacked.
However, the club released a statement denying that they have taken such action, and lashed out at newspaper Midi Olympique that broke the story.
The statement read: "Aviron Bayonnais Rugby Pro says that so far no decision has been made regarding the recent facts reported by the press.
"Aviron Bayonnais Rugby Pro deplores the deliberate attempt on the part of Midi Olympique and its website to destabilise (the club) on the eve of an important game in the club season."
Phillips, who was namd in Wales' squad for the November internationals this week, took to Twitter to apologise for his conduct.
He said: "Sorry to all the fans of Bayonne for this situation, I agree wholeheartedly with the team for tomorrow night. good luck."
