Beale back to rehab

Rebels utility back Kurtley Beale will not be involved in the Rebels last game of the season as he heads back to finish his recovery from an alcohol problem.

Following the third Test against The British & Irish Lions, the Rebels have decided it is best for Beale to continue his off field program in Sydney, and will not return for the final match against the Highlanders.

Rebels Chief Executive, Rob Clarke, spoke of the franchises ongoing responsibility in prioritising Beale's welfare above the immediate needs of the Club.

"The focus and priority at the Rebels has always been Kurtley's welfare.

"All parties agree that it is in Kurtley's best interests for that to continue," said Clarke.

Beale will complete his rehabilitation in order to be available for selection for the Rugby Championship and Clarke believes that it is in his best interest to finish his program.

"The decision not to select Kurtley in the Rebels' final match will allow him to complete the next phase of his program, before potential Wallaby selection for the August 17 Bledisloe Cup match."

In what has been a busy few days for the Rebels, they announced that Tony McGahan has been appointed head coach as Damien Hill departs. This, along with the news of James O'Connor's unrenewed contract and the departure of Wallaby scrumhalf Nick Phipps means that the Melbourne franchise is heading into some potentially tough times.

In another revelation, Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has made it known that he is interested in regaining the services of Kurtley Beale in Sydney. This could be a massive coup for the Waratahs as the lure of home securities in what has been a tough time for the back could mean Beale will make the trip back to New South Wales.
