Catrakilis trades Kings for WP
Southern Kings flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis has signed a two-year deal with Western Province that will see him remain in the Cape for a further two years after the Currie Cup tournament.
Catrakilis returned to Cape Town after the Super Rugby season, initially on a loan deal, but has now put pen to paper for another two seasons.
“Demetri knows our structures and systems and it’s great news to have him back here – for the Currie Cup and beyond,” said Western Province head coach Allister Coetzee.
“He left us to gather Super Rugby experience and he has come back with that [Super Rugby] knowledge and the confidence to continue contributing for Western Province and the Stormers.
“Demetri will hopefully be back in action in the next two weeks [from his shoulder injury] and we look forward to seeing him back on the field in the 2013 Currie Cup competition.”
The 24-year-old has played 34 matches for Western Province since 2011, scoring a total of 425 points. Of those 425 points, 136 came in the 2012 Currie Cup tournament – including a match-winning haul of 17 in last year’s Final in Durban. He also notched up 127 points during Western Province’s victorious 2012 Vodacom Cup campaign.
Coetzee added: “It’s well-documented what Demetri achieved in last year’s Currie Cup, so we’re lucky to be able to call upon him, Gary van Aswegen and Kurt Coleman – not to mention youngsters like Tim Swiel and Dillyn Leyds, who have done so well in the WP Under-21 team in the No.10 jersey.”
