Springbok flank Schalk Burger could make his long awaited return from injury for Western Province in the Currie Cup.
Burger joined his Western Province teammates for a field training session on Wednesday and assistant coach Robbie Fleck is hopeful that the Springbok veteran will be fit to play a role in the second half of the defending champions’ campaign.
“He’s [Burger’s] been training pretty hard in the gym and our fitness and conditioning coach Stef du Toit has been putting him through his paces,” Fleck said on Wednesday.
“It was good to see him out [on the field] today. It’s the longest session he’s had with us on the park and it’s looking really positive. Hopefully we’ll be looking at getting him back in the mix for the second round [of the Currie Cup], but we’re not pushing him and he’s not pushing us.
“It’s awesome to have him back in the mix both on and off the pitch. He helps with the seniors, the management – in terms of the preparation – and giving the squad the confidence that we need.”
Burger has been battling to recover from a number of injuries and meningitis that forced him into ICU over Easter.
Captain Deon Fourie said Burger’s presence inspired the players.
“He brings a completely different vibe to training with all his knowledge and experience. Western Province and the Stormers miss him and we’re really looking forward to his return,” said Fourie.
