Gloucester need a Savage edge

Gloucester lock Tom Savage admits his side is flying under the radar in the Premiership despite some fine form which has seen them rise into the play-off positions.

The Cherry and Whites have notched up some brilliant wins over Bath, London Wasps and Leicester Tigers since losing their first game of the season against Northampton Saints.

Kingsholm has proven to be a fortress for the side this season – they have lost at home just once in the Premiership – and they continued their run with an 18-16 win over Exeter Chiefs which lifted them into fourth place.

And despite mixing it at the right end of the table, Savage – who recently signed a new three-year contract – admits the squad feels it should be in a stronger position as just nine points separate the top seven sides in the league.

"There are a few games we should have got some better results in – we have missed some opportunities to be a little higher in the table," he said.

"We are happy with where we are though, we are where we wanted to be at this stage and it's just a question of staying there at the moment.

"We have gone a bit under the radar. It's just a case of carrying on in the same way we are.

"It's very tight at the top of the table – one loss could take you from first to fourth, while one win could see you shoot up the table.

"It's going to be a tough period going into the New Year but we just need to keep trying to get results to make sure we are in the mix at the end of the season."

Savage has established himself as a regular for Gloucester in the Premiership this season after he broke into the team at the end of last year's campaign, playing all 11 fixtures so far.

And even capping a fine year with his first senior try for the club, in a 31-25 victory away to London Welsh in September, the 23-year-old admits adding a few more in 2013 would be the icing on the cake.

"It would be nice if I could get a few more tries here and there after getting that first try against London Welsh," he added.

"I don't base my game on getting tries, but if I could score a few more then that would be great – it's not something I'm targeting as such though."
