Hurricanes hang on to young stars

Hooker Motu Matu'u and wing Matt Proctor have agreed two-year contract extensions with the Hurricanes.

Matu’u enjoyed an impressive debut Super Rugby season last year but fell victim to the Hurricanes No.2 injury curse this season when a broken arm in the loss the Stormers limited him to eight outings in the 2013 campaign.

He’s been retained as back-up to first-choice hooker Dane Coles, who made just six appearances this season due to injuries, and with Coles set to be on All Black duty in the Rugby Championship, Matu’u will receive plenty of game time for Wellington in the ITM Cup.

Proctor is coming off his maiden Super Rugby season in which he made four appearances. The versatile 19-year-old, who can also play fullback, made three starts and bagged his first Super Rugby try.

He will join Matu’u in the Wellington Lions squad.
