Jones relishing coaching career

Welsh rugby legend Stephen Jones says he’s excited about taking the next step in his career and joining the coaching staff at London Wasps next season.

Jones, though, has one thing on his mind this weekend and that’s helping his side get back on track against Saracens at Adams Park.

“I am really excited about moving into coaching next season. I love the professionalism that we have at Wasps and the attitude and desire of the players.

“It is very infectious to be in that kind of environment and it is an honour to be given the job of helping to guide that next season, but we have a huge end to the season to come first,” he said.

Jones has already made a big impact in the Wasps shirt this season, despite being restricted so far to just 12 appearances, he has scored 130 points.

He reflects back on last weekend’s loss to Northampton without being able to hide his disappointment at the end result.

“Out of any of the games we have lost this year that was the most frustrating for me. I thought that we had just done enough and to lose the game in the manner we did hurt a lot.

“The elements were obviously not favourable for an open, expansive game but we did try to express ourselves. We are a side who, when we get over the gain line and get some go forward, can cause some real problems.”

Looking ahead to Saracens, he adds: “We are up against a good defensive outfit but it’s very important that we back our own ability to break them down.

“I was impressed with their physicality last weekend, they managed to stop Harlequins’ runners straight away and stopped their go forward. It is important that we attack creatively and back our own ability.

“These are the games that you enjoy as a player, you want to play against good sides, against players who are starting for their countries and this will be a good test for us.”
