Saints suffer Bok blow

Springbok prop Brian Mujati suffered a calf injury in Northampton Saints’ 17-16 Premiership loss to Saracens on Sunday.

Mujati limped off in the 36th minute of the match and Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder said the extent of the injury is not yet known.

"Not too sure," said Mallinder.

"He injured his calf so I'm not exactly sure what the extent of the damage is. Hopefully it's not too bad."

The injury is the latest setback for the Zimbabwean-born tighthead, whose hopes to add to his 12 Springbok Test caps were all but quashed in November.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer had wanted to draft Mujati into his squad for the year-end tour and had asked the South African Rugby Union to formally approach Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula to get clearance for Mujati.

Mbalulu turned down the request, with his Special Advisor and spokesperson Justin de Allende explaining to this website that Mujati would have to follow the same process as another Zimbabwean Springbok, Tendai Mtawarira, did two years ago if Mujati was to rekindle his international career.

“He [Mujati] has to live in South Africa for the prescribed period, play his rugby here and apply for citizenship," said De Allende.

Days after the move was blocked, Mujati effectively ended his Test career by signing for Racing Metro.

He will join the Paris club at the end of the season.
