Samurai cruise through Day One


The star-studded Samurai and Kenyan teams cruised unbeaten through Day One at the George Premier League Sevens tournament on Saturday.

Samurai, the South African Academy team with a number of first-choice SA Sevens stars added in for good measure, accumulated 128 points in their three matches.

The whitewashed the Eye of the Tiger selection 38-0, Kaizer Chiefs 45-10 and the Sharks 45-7.

Paul Treu's Kenyan team – disguised as Shujaa – was only slightly less impressive as they beat the Titans 19-14, the Cheetahs 34-12 and host SWD 22-12.

For their troubles Samurai will face Living Ball in the Cup quarterfinals and Kenya will come up against Western Province.

Cup quarterfinals:
Kaizer Chiefs v SWD
Samurai v Living Ball
Unlimited Titans v Sharks
Kenya v Western Province

Bowl semifinals:
Eye of the Tiger v Cheetahs
Leopards v Masakhane Old Boys

The pre-tournament favourites, Kenya Shujaa and Samurai, were the only unbeaten teams.

Both teams topped their respective pools and look favourites to reach the semifinals on Sunday.

Crowd favourites Kaizer Chiefs, coached by Gqobani Bobo and Breyton Paulse, also ended top of their pool and will face the home team, SWD Eagles in the first quarterfinal match.

Another favourite, the Unlimited Titans making their debut in the tournament, only lost against the strong Kenyan outfit, coached by former BlitzBok coach Paul Treu, and also reached the quarterfinals, where they will come up against the Sharks.

The Cheetahs had a disappointing day and failed to reach the Cup quarters.

They will play in the Bowl semifinals against Eye of the Tiger.
