Schools Top 20 - 2 May 2018

For this Top 20, we have taken into consideration the matches at the Wildeklawer, Grey High School and Klein Karoo tournaments.

As a result, we have a long list of relevant results. Three of the current Top 20 did not play – Transvalia, Bishops and Ben Vorster, and Framesby played in Japan. The three who did not play have already played several matches this season, but we do have the principle of rewarding teams that played.

Do we change the Top Four, each of whom won both of their matches? It's hard to demote a winner, even if somebody else seems to be playing more inspiring rugby.

Then we get to number five – Monnas who lost both of their matches but to teams ranked above them. And at number six, Oakdale won both matches but against opposition less strong. The same is true of Glenwood.

Then there are Affies and Selborne, teams not on the previous Top 20, who have beaten Top 20 opposition. Those two are the big beneficiaries of the weekend's action.

This may just be the hardest Top 20 we have done over the last 20 years! But the good news that it brings is that there are many great rugby-playing schools in South Africa and that the gap between number one and thirty is not all that big.
