Sharks exodus continues to grow
Tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst is the latest Sharks player to announce his departure from the Durban-based franchise.
Herbst, who will join Ulster at the conclusion of the Super Rugby season, made the announcement on the same day it was revealed that Springbok loose forward Keegan Daniel is heading to Japan.
The 25-year-old Herbst, who hails from Klerksdorp, came through the Sharks' Academy and made his Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup debuts in 2009.
He played his first game in Super Rugby for the Sharks in the 2010 season and has gone on to make 37 appearances in the competition.
He has represented South Africa at Schools and Under-19 level and was part of the South African squad at the 2007 Under-19 World Championship in Ireland, where he played at Ravenhill – his new home ground.
He also represented South Africa at the IRB Junior World Championships in Wales in 2008.
Speaking about his decision to join Ulster Rugby Herbst said the Irish province is a team on the up.
"For me it was just a great opportunity to develop my career and to take it to the next level," the front row forward said.
"The team is doing extremely well at the moment and with the stadium being redeveloped there is a great set-up at Ravenhill – it will be exciting to be part of."
Ulster's Director of Rugby David Humphreys added: "I am delighted that Wiehahn has decided to join Ulster. He is a highly talented young player with a proven track-record in a specialist position.
"I have no doubt that he will be a huge success at the Province and that he will follow in the footsteps of the other overseas players that have come to Ravenhill in making a major contribution to the success of Ulster."
Commenting on his departure Sharks CEO John Smit said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for Wiehahn to further his career and we wish him the very best for his move to Ulster.
"We thank him for his positive contribution to Sharks rugby over the last few years."
Herbst has nothing but fond memories of his time in Durban.
"I will definitely miss The Sharks. I arrived in Durban straight out of school and have played all my professional rugby at this union.
"My time here has seen me develop as a player and I have had the opportunity of winning a Currie Cup, an experience I will never forget.
"The Sharks will always be special to me and I will cherish the friendships made. I see this move as an opportunity to develop my career and to take it to the next level."
