Simpson signs new Wasps deal
Joe Simpson is set to enjoy a long and bright future in the black and gold shirt of London Wasps with the scrumhalf this week putting pen to paper on a new long term deal.
The 24-year-old has already represented London Wasps 105 times, having made his debut in 2008, and has become a pivotal player at the club, with his trademark speed being complemented by an excellent kicking game and strong game management skills.
A previous winner of the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Season, voted for entirely by fans, and the Players’ Player of the Season, Simpson has long been a crowd favourite among the London Wasps faithful and news of his new deal provides a welcome boost ahead of the new season.
He joins a number of young players who have previously committed their future to the club including Joe Launchbury, Christian Wade, Sam Jones, Elliot Daly and James Cannon, highlighting how exciting the next chapter in the club’s history is set to be.
Simpson said: “I am delighted to sign a new contract. Wasps is my home town club and the club I grew up supporting. I was honoured to play for Wasps full stop, let alone become one of the senior players and play as many times as I have already. I am excited about the future that we have here on and off the field.
“Some of our best players here haven’t even reached their prime yet and we’ve got a squad who are nowhere near their peak yet and that’s the reason I want to be part of it. I want to grow as a player with this squad and go and help Wasps to compete for honours again. Personally I also want to represent my country again and I believe this is a great place to help me to try and achieve that.”
Simpson also paid tribute to the coaching staff at London Wasps.
“We’ve got a great coaching set up here and the right man in charge in Dai Young who is taking us in a great direction. Dai is very well respected and well liked here and I really enjoy working with him.”
Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young said. “I am very pleased that Joe is committing himself to club for the future. He already a very good player but I believe there is a lot more to come from him.
“We’ve got a core of young English talent here and Joe is at the heart of that. He’s achieved a lot for his age but he’s got the ability and talent to achieve lots more as a Wasps player.”
