Solly: 'We set the record straight'

Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomons praised his side's herculean defensive effort for bringing to an end a five match losing streak on the road in Europe.

Edinburgh were forced to work hard for their 16-10 victory over Gloucester on Sunday which breathed new life into their European Cup Pool Six campaign.

"I think we set the record straight with that performance out there. It was a performance of character and heart," said Solomons.

"We were determined to change things after losing the previous weekend and we're pleased to at least be back in the frame in the Pool. We will just take every game as it comes now.

"We have three massive domestic games against Leinster and Glasgow Warriors home and away to come before we get back into Europe.

"Defensively we were superb and I thought everybody played well. There wasn't anyone who didn't give of themselves.

"The players who came in did a really good job for us. I left out players like Grieg Laidlaw, Dave Denton and Nick de Luca because I detected signs of both mental and physical fatigue in their performances last week.

"They had played for Scotland throughout the Autumn internationals and then come into the European Cup. I just felt that by bringing in fresh faces it would help us and, in the end, it was a win, win situation all round."

Edinburgh have a home clash with Perpignan in Round Five before travelling to face pool leaders Munster in Round Six. They beat the Irish side at home in their opening game and will need to win both games to stand any chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals of either the European Cup or Challenge Cup.

"I have a massive amount of respect for Munster. They had a great victory yesterday, but we will just concentrate on our own performance when we go there," added Solomons.
