Thorn: Reds' 40-year-old bolter?

However, Thorn said there is a possibility of playing again if things go pear-shaped in terms of injuries.

"If things got dire straits I am happy to help out in any way I can, but I think things are under control at the moment and I got my role that I am doing here," said Thorn.

"There is always an urge. I said I didn’t actually retire, I am just playing worse now. At the moment I am just focussed on my coaching role here and working with the young developing players coming through.

"I am really enjoying that role the last couple of weeks I have been here."

Thorn: Reds' 40-year-old bolter?Thorn is no stranger to the surroundings in Brisbane having played Rugby League for ten years for the Brisbane Broncos in Australia's National Rugby League competition before switching to Rugby Union.

"It's nice to be back. It's been eight years and I am finally back home with the Thorn family so it's really nice – enjoying the blue sky and the warm weather.

"I appreciate the Reds and I like to consider Brisbane my home city, so I feel lucky to be involved and my goal is to contribute where I can," Thorn added.

Thorn also believes he has the necessary experience in coaching to successfully assist the Reds.

"I did a little bit of coaching when I was in Japan. When I was at the Highlanders I was the strength coach as well as a player. For me this is just another step with it and having a bit more of a taste for it with these young guys and seeing if I can contribute well.

"I pride myself on what I do on the field and what I do off it."
