Weepu 'ready to return'

Veteran All Black scrumhalf Piri Weepu will resume training with the Blues, following his health scare and surgery.

It was revealed last month that Weepu had suffered a minor stroke, the cause of which was related to a congenital cardiac disease where he had a small hole in his heart.

The 30-year-old Weepu, who last played for the Blues in their March 22 win over the Cheetahs, has now made a full recovery and is expected to return to training this coming week.

After consultation with his neurologist and cardiologist, the 71-Test No.9 has been cleared to rejoin the team, although he won't be available for Friday's Super Rugby Round 10 encounter with the Hurricanes in Wellington.

Instead he is expected to be in contention to face the Waratahs in Auckland a week later.

"Weepu had surgery to close the hole just over a week ago and has since made a full recovery, with no residual deficits from the earlier stroke," the Blues said in a statement.

Weepu's improved health came as the Blues announced a much-improved medical report across the squad, after they enjoyed a bye in the latest round of the demanding championship.

Keven Mealamu, Patrick Tuipulotu, Peter Saili, Kane Barrett, Tom Donnelly, Jamison Gibson-Park and Jackson Willison will all return to full training this week.

"Provided they come through unscathed, they will be available for selection against the Hurricanes," the Blues said.
