Hurricanes scrumhalf TJ Perenara has admitted that veteran All Black Piri Weepu taught him a lesson in Auckland on Saturday.

World Cup-winner Weepu has turned his game around this season under new Blues coach John Kirwan after improving his fitness considerably and was back to his best against his old team as the Blues made it a season double over the Hurricanes at Eden Park.

Perenara said that he was trying to learn as much as he could by playing against an on-form Weepu.

He told Fairfax media: "I love playing against him, he's a mate of mine. He continues to help me improve my game. Being able to test myself against probably the best halfback in New Zealand at the moment is always good. He played really well tonight. He executed his chances better than I did.

"He ran well; passed well. He probably taught me a little lesson on how to play halfback at the top level. It's from those games you learn the most."

Blues coach John Kirwan was also quick to heap praise on Weepu who was cetral to the Blues' convincing victory on Saturday.

"Piri just gets better every week," Kirwan said. "He's just happy and playing like it. He's really accelerating, getting there and making the passes, giving himself time to dart around the edges. Any team that wins their nine, 10 needs to play well and they did that."
