Junior Boks get England in Semis

The four Under-20 World Championship semifinalists are the three pool winners – New Zealand, England and France – and the best second-placed team, which is South Africa.

The semifinals on Tuesday are France vs New Zealand and England vs South Africa.

It may just have been a case of felix culpa, a happy fault, for South Africa to lose to France and play England instead of New Zealand!

All the scores and scorers!

New Zealand 27-18 Australia

This may just have been Australia’s best performance of the tournament but losing it put paid to any hope they may have had of making the semifinals of the championship. New Zealand had scored 16 tries in their first two matches, but only three in this one. In its first two matches New Zealand had conceded just one try, that against Wales, but Australia scored two tries in this match.

Besides the interest in Australia’s future in the tournament, it was a lively, energetic and entertaining match.

Georgia 24-20 Ireland

You feel sorry for Ireland – just lost to France, just lost to South Africa, just lost to Georgia – just lost all three of their matches . It’s almost true except that they were well beaten by the determined Georgians. The score looks better because Ireland scored 12 points in the last three minutes.

Before that Georgia had ruled, leading from start to finish. They had two important strings to their bow – adamantine defence and taking chances on offer.

When the Irish bashed their goal-line, the Georgians defended like Horatio of old. If Ireland set about spreading the ball, the Georgian defenders rushed at them, using a duo of tacklers per ball-carrier. Often the first tackler would take the opponent by the ankles.

Georgia suffered a yellow card for a high tackle, but when Sandro Mamamtavrishvili was away Georgia scored seven points, Ireland five.

There was a startling intercept when centre Giorgi Tsiklauri caught an Irish pass and ran 83 metres down the middle of the field to score under the posts.

France 46-29 South Africa

It was a weird match. After half an hour, France led 36-0 against the seemingly bewildered South Africans. Then the young southern men said Basta! Enough. They then outscored the French 29-10 in the rest of the match as the young South Africans took the ball on the French up front.

The five tries the South Africans scored were enough for the bonus point that ensured then four place in the semis.
