Middelburg captain - Marius Verwey

Marius Verwey will be leading a young and spirited all grade 11 team against rivals HTS Middelburg in their FNB CLassic Clash at the weekend.

What Verwey lacks in age and experience as a grade 11 he makes up for in size, standing at 1.95cm and weighing in at 115 kg, the big lock has played all 10 of his team's games to date.

Already spotted as a talent, Verwey has played Mpumalanga under 16B rugby and says the competition was something he thrived on.

"It was nice to experience and there was a good rivalry," the captain said.

"I truly enjoyed meeting other rugby boys with the same rugby heart."

In his school career, Verwey's announcement as captain really stood out for him.

"It is an amazing feeling, and I’m so proud," he added

"The first time I ran out as captain in front of the team I could feel the Middie blood in my heart."

Verwey is a scrapper as a player and that never-say-die attitude comes though both in his playing style as well as his captaincy.

"I never give up. I will always fight till the end and I thrive on challenges," Verwey said.

"I am the type of person that leads from the front, I want people to do as I do"

The Middelburg derby is a bit of a 50/50 one on results, HTS being more successful recently but Middelburg High School have gotten over some impressive victories in 2009 and 20012.
