Old SACS go to Old Wynberg
SACS are accepted as the oldest school in South Africa, though Wynberg were actually founded before SACS. Wynberg lapsed for 18 months and now takes 1841 as its founding date. In the early days SACS was in town but since 1960 it has been in Newlands, just some five kilometres from Wynberg.
Similar in age and location, they are also similar in colours, both blue and white stripes, Wynberg's stripes broader.
The similarities make for keen rivalry and for both this match ends each rugby term – the second term and the third term and with it the season. There is a lot riding on the game.
For Wynberg there is added motivation as it is the last match for their popular headmaster Keith Richardson, whose age forces him into retirement a year before the school turns 175.
Season So Far
SACS are ranked 13th on the FNB Top 20. The young Wynberg side has not been close to being on the Top 20.
In fact it has been an exceptionally good season for SACS and an unusually poor season for Wynberg who have not shirked playing tough sides and who could well reap the benefit next year.
Wynberg have played 18 matches, won nine and lost nine. None of their wins were against teams in the Top 20.
SACS have played 21, won 16 and lost five. Teams that are or have been on the Top 20 that they have beaten are Affies, (Bishops (twice), Dale and Boland Landbou.
