Tygerberg take Villager Sevens

Tygerberg Hoërskool have one of the most crack Sevens teams in South Africa and they showed it again on Friday night when they beat Wynberg Boys' High in the Final of the Villager Sevens. They made it a clean sweep when their B team won the Plate.

Those who know the Villager Sevens will be astonished to know that it was played in beautiful weather. The Sevens were originally scheduled for the previous Friday but the heavens opened and the referees declared the fields unfit for play. This caused the Sevens to be shunted to Friday, 7 September. The change meant that some schools withdrew but the Villager Sevens goes far wider than the Cape Peninsula, in far as Caledon in fact with the exciting team from Overberg Hoërskool. There were still 22 teams taking part.

One of those outside of the Peninsula is Tygerberg of Parow, who won the trophy in 2010. This year they beat Wynberg on a close-fought Final. Wynberg were the winners in 2011. Tygerberg only just made it – a try in the last minute gave them a two-point win.

The Plate Final was won by Tygerberg B team
