Lions put key players on standby

The Lions are currently involved in two top-flight competitions.

They host the Sharks in a Super Rugby quarterfinal match at Ellis Park on Saturday and Sunday they travel to Nelspruit to play the Pumas in the Currie Cup competition with another squad.

To avoid disruptions to both squads – in case of injury – the Lions have decided to 'freeze out' a number of players.

Justin Ackerman, Hencus van Wyk, Robbie Coetzee, Robert Kruger, Dillon Smit, Jaco van der Walt and Anthony Volmink are all training with the Super Rugby squad and not available for Curie Cup duty – even though they are not in the quarterfinal matchday squad.

They will remain with the Super Rugby squad as long as the team continue their winning streak.

Captain Warren Whiteley, centre Howard Mnisi, as well as props Dylan Smith and Julian Redelinghuys are unavailable as a result if injuries.
