Despite the defeat, Marais was proud of his side's second-half performance. Marais also revealed what he said to his players at the break to turn their performance around.

"You can go in there [change room] and scream and fight or just get the guys to relax and play a bit of rugby," said Marais.

"I said to them you got two choices – either you crawl up in a corner and die or you get out there and fight and they got to play for their pride.

"I am very proud of them."

Even though Bulls were down by 29-points at the break, Marais still felt that his side had enough firepower to pull off the victory.

"I still believe we could have won the game in the end if we executed better – too many missed opportunities," Marais added.

"I am very proud they came back, but we still going home with one point instead of four.

"But all credit to Western Province they killed us in the first half…losing is not acceptable."
