Sharks 'stepping down' to step up

Centre Lukhanyo Am, one of several players who will come into the Currie Cup selection frame after the completion of the Durban-based franchise's Super Rugby commitments, said they are keen to get stuck into the oldest provincial competition in the world.

In a weekend of disappointing results for the Sharks their Super Rugby side lost 21-23 in a nail-biter against the Sharks and the Free State Cheetahs blew them away (47-12) in the opening round of the Currie Cup.

"We want to take the momentum that we built in Super Rugby into the Currie Cup," Am said of the players stepping down from the Super Rugby arena to the Currie Cup stage.

"We still have the majority of the squad together, so hopefully that continuity will work in our favour."

He added that they will look to the Currie Cup to put the disappointment of losing in the Super Rugby quarterfinal behind them.

"We had a couple of disappointing performances in Super Rugby, so going into the Currie Cup, we'll take it game by game and try to execute the game plan for each specific game."

Despite the arrival of a host of Super Rugby players, the Sharks will still face a tough challenge in the form of a Pumas outfit that knocked the Golden Lions over last week.

"There are no easy games and it all comes down to who performs on the day," said Am.

"This is a big game, the first one at home, we have confidence and hopefully the result will go our way."
