Centre Owen to leave the Scarlets

Owen, 28, joined the Scarlets in 2012 and has made 75 appearances for the region, scoring six tries.

Tough competition in the backline at the Scarlets kept Owen's appearances tally to nine in 2016-17, which included a European Rugby Champions Cup appearance against former champions Toulon.

Commenting on the news Scarlets General Manager of Rugby Jon Daniels said: "Having expressed a desire to move on from the Scarlets due to a lack of game time we have come to an agreement with Gareth allowing him to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

"Strength in depth in the backline limited Gareth's opportunities in the Scarlets jersey last season. Despite being disappointed to see a player of his calibre leave the region we wish him well for the future."

Gareth Owen added: "I would like to thank the Scarlets for the opportunities I've had over the last five years. I've enjoyed my time at the region and was honoured to wear the jersey but have been frustrated with limited game time in recent months.

"I'm grateful to the Scarlets for allowing me to pursue this exciting opportunity and wish all the boys well as they look to retain the PRO12 trophy in 2017-18."

In addition to continuing the development of the region's talented youngsters in Ioan Nicholas, Ryan Conbeer and Corey Baldwin the Scarlets have identified a player who will add strength in depth to the backline.
