Hapless Kings call up reinforcements

The Kings are enjoying a welcome break from the competition, before their next assignment against high-flying Glasgow Warriors on Saturday, October 28.

Invaluable to the players, as it afforded them a few extra days to recover from the inevitable bumps and bruises and niggles that they picked up during the course of the game, the break also presented the coaching staff with an opportunity to take stock of franchise performances to date and to start making changes where necessary.

An obvious weakness which stood out so far this season for the Kings is a lack of depth in certain positions and it was thus with great excitement that coach Deon Davids announced that the Kings had secured the services of Sharks prop forward Mzamo Majola and South Western Districts flyhalf Martin Du Toit – on loan until the end of the Pro14 championship.

Majola is rated as one of the rising front row stars of South African and has already been capped by his country at Under-20 level.

His arrival brings welcome depth to the position for Davids, who has been forced to field veteran hardman Schalk Ferreira in the No.1 jersey in every match so far this season.

The signing of Du Toit, who can also play at inside centre, ensures the Kings have another option at flyhalf – where they have missed the playmaking ability of the injured Kurt Coleman over the past few weeks.

Coleman's anticipated return to action within the next few weeks could then present Davids with a rare selection dilemma at flyhalf should Pieter-Steyn De Wet, Oliver Zono and Martin Du Toit all be fit and ready to play.

"We welcome Mzamo and Martin to the squad," Davids said.

"They are both good players whom we have kept our eyes on for a while and there is no doubt they will add depth and strengthen our squad.

"Don't be at all surprised if another name or two follows in their footsteps shortly," the coach added cryptically.
