Kriel sustained a severe shoulder injury in the Rugby Championship test against Australia in Perth on September 9

As a result, he will undergo an operation on Tuesday and is expected to return to play in six months.

Kriel will miss the rest of the Rugby Championship and the end-of-year tour. He is also set to miss the start of the Lions' 2018 Super Rugby campaign.

Meanwhile, Lions lock Lourens Erasmus will undergo an operation on his left knee and will be out of action for approximately three months.

Erasmus has been sent back to South Africa after he got injured while in action in Japan.

The Springboks face the Wallabies in Bloemfontein on September 30 before they end their Rugby Championship campaign against the All Blacks in Cape Town on October 7.
