Injury cloud dims Wales' Six Nations campaign

North, who will return to Welsh rugby at the end of the Premiership season, sustained the knee injury during Northampton Saints’ 21-50 defeat to Harlequins last weekend at Twickenham Stadium.

The 25-year-old's latest setback requires up to four weeks rehabilitation.

The wing, who only returned to action last Saturday after an 11-week absence due to an injury to his posterior cruciate ligament, will hope for a speedy recovery just in time for Wales' Six Nations opener against Scotland on February 3.

Commenting on the injury Saints Technical Coaching Consultant Alan Gaffney said, "While it’s disappointing that George will be missing ahead of Saturday’s game [against Gloucester], this injury means an opportunity for another player in the squad to step up to the plate.

"I’m sure George will be diligent in his rehab and we all wish him a swift recovery,"

Aside from North's setback, Wales coach Warren Gatland's injury list seems to increase daily.

Wales are already without the services of flank Dan Lydiate and his injured fellow flank Sam Warburton for Six Nations, while number eight Taulupe Faletau is recovering from knee trouble and won't be back until late February or early March.

Ross Moriarty is also sidelined through injury and Jonathan Davies is another long-term absentee, having been hurt during Wales' November defeat against Australia.
