Abel re-signs for Brumbies

Abel, a local product who attended St Edmund's College, joined the Brumbies in 2016 following stints with Northland in the National Provincial Championship and with the Western Force in Super Rugby.

The 28-year-old spent two years with the Perth based franchise before returning to Canberra in late 2015 to link up with the UC Vikings in the National Rugby Championship.

Abel's impressive form in the competition earned him an EPS contract with the Brumbies for 2016. Abel would go on to make two appearances off the bench for the Brumbies during that season.

The hooker said there was nowhere else he would rather continue his rugby career than at the Brumbies.

"It's fantastic to be able to say that I will be a Brumby for at least the next two seasons," Abel said after signing his deal.

"Having attended a Canberra school from a young age, the Brumbies have always been a big part of my life from watching them and aspiring to play for the team, as a young schoolboy to making my debut against the Cheetahs last season.

"We are very lucky at the franchise to have a wealth of talented players and we all get along very well together. I work very closely with Bongo [Josh Mann-Rea] and I feel we complement each other.

"I am proud to represent my local team and I have enjoyed this season, being a part of the matchday squad on a regular basis. I am aiming to further my career and help the Brumbies and the ACT Rugby community be successful."

The 2017 season has seen Abel establish himself in Brumbies colours, having been selected in every Brumbies matchday squad this season. Strong at the set piece and a hard worker around the ground, Abel has shown he is a strong hooker at Super Rugby level.

Brumbies head coach Dan McKellar said he was pleased to have Abel back on board.

"Robbie has shown in 2017 that he is up to Super Rugby standard week in and week out," McKellar said.

"He brings a different skill-set and his set-piece is very good. His point of difference is probably his ability to offload and use the ball well.

"Robbie has come through our local pathway system and the challenge for his mow, as an individual, is to kick-on."
