The Lions will now have to continue their season without the service of key player Nic Groom.

The 28-year-old fractured his left hand during the Lions 38-12 win over the Bulls at Ellis Park.

The former Stormers player will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday and will miss the rest of the Super Rugby season.

Fortunately, the 2016 and 2017 tournament runners-ups, have the likes of  Springbok scrumhalf Ross Cronje to fill the void left by Groom.

The Lions will host the Jaguares in the quarterfinal at Ellis Park this Saturday.

And the Lions captain Warren Whitley admitted there is “a lot to work on” if they want to put an end to their Super Rugby trophy drought.

“I still think we have an extra gear,” Whiteley said, adding: “We know in the playoffs each and every opportunity is like gold,”

He admitted that the Lions must be “more ruthless” this week when the South Americans visit.

“I feel at times, defensively, we can be sharper.

“We can get there, [but] I feel we are on the right path.
