Stormers 'not intimidated' by Lions challenge

The Stormers are still without an away win in this season's Super Rugby tournament. Their recent defeat on the road came in the form of a disappointing 23-33 defeat to the Bulls in Pretoria last weekend.

However, Robbie Fleck's side will fancy their chances of getting that first away win against the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Lions have lost three of their last four games in what has been a dramatic decline by a team who appeared in the last two finals of Super Rugby. They were also given an almighty scare a few weeks ago when the Sunwolves ran them close in a high-scoring affair at Ellis Park.

"All the local games whether home or away, they are going to be tough games," said Stormers assistant coach Russell Winter.

"We are not intimidated by going up there. We know they [Lions] are still a very good side and the challenge is massive this weekend.

"Going up there is exactly what we want to do, we want to play the best sides and we want to build on the team culture and the character of the team.

"Winning there would be awesome, but we do understand that it is going to require a massive effort from everybody in the team to pull it off.

"We are not fearing the challenge at all."

The Lions are coming off an 8-14 defeat to the Crusaders and they will be under pressure to get their campaign back on track.

"The Lions will want to be better. They will have zero complacency in their team. They are just like us, they are hurting," said Winter.

"They are not happy about losing on the weekend. That is a game I'm sure they wanted to win – it’s the final from last year. They were probably massively motivated as were we for our game [against the Bulls]. They got certain things wrong and so did we.

Winter added: "I really think that this weekend will be a massive challenge for both teams. We are really looking forward to going up there and, hopefully, things go our way and we don't make the silly errors that we did this weekend."
