VIDEO: Lengthy lay-off for Tahs' Wallaby star

Tahs coach Daryl Gibson confirmed that Wallaby star Israel Folau could miss up to a month, after sustaining a hamstring injury on the opening exchanges of the crucial encounter.

While the victory put the Tahs firmly back in the play-off race, Folau's injury is a cruel blow for the Sydney-based franchise.

Folau came off after just five minutes of the encounter in Canberra.

The 28-year-old is yet to undergo scans to assess the full extent of the injury.

It is expected that he will be sidelined until early May, when the Waratahs meet the Blues at Brookvale Oval in Week 12.

Folau currently leads the Waratahs in run metres, line breaks, tackle busts and offloads and has scored two tries for the two-win side.

Folau said he knew immediately that his hamstring had gone.

Folau strained the same hamstring in the third Test of the  2013 British and Irish Lions series, and he knew straight away he wouldn't be able to play another minute.

"My first run, I went to take off and I just felt it go then," he said.

"I did the same hammy in the past in the British and Irish Lions series, so I know the feeling, so just knew straight away to come straight off."

Folau believes the Waratahs put down a crucial marker in their "scrappy" win in Canberra on Saturday.

"It was such an important game to win, it's really put us in a positive position to go forward from there," he said.

"[It is a] tough couple of weeks ahead of us as a team but the guys are looking forward to the challenge."
